The Helen L. Fox Gospel Music Center (HLFGMC) is a 501©3 charitable corporation established for the purpose of providing access to music education to an underserved community. Yet, the urban community has fewer and fewer options for youth to capitalize on either natural or developed talent. The Helen L. Fox Gospel Music Center is working to change that. We believe that the demonstrated need for this project lies in the inequity in access to music education. Our goal is to improve the quality of life and well being within the community in general and in the urban community in particular through the power of music.
For many urban and disadvantaged youth the benefits of music education simply do not exist. Many have never touched, handled or played a musical instrument. Living in a world where everyday survival means needing the basics such as food, shelter and clothing, budgets for music education quickly disappear from the hierarchy of needs. Music education should be more than a luxury for those with means. Music education can be and is an alternative path to life skills and overall success.
The importance of music education cannot be overemphasized. Research has demonstrated that music education
- expedites learning in other academic subjects and boosts students’ abilities useful in everyday life
- playing an instrument improves standardized test scores because standardized tests require a similar focus and concentration that goes along with playing an instrument
- music benefits the overall well being of individuals
Lessons are provided to individuals having a desire to learn and are open to anyone in the community. The primary focus is on urban youth who have been identified as having an interest in music education but have little or no resources to access music instruction, instruments or practice facilities.
Currently the Helen L. Fox Gospel Music Center provides piano and violin lessons. Each student has the option to take piano and/or violin, and cost is based on the ability to pay. Other instruments will be offered as our program expands. We are located in the heart of the north side community of Kalamazoo with our office and studios located within the Douglass Community Association.
Bridget is the President and Board Member/Co-Founder of Helen L. Fox Gospel Music Center. She currently serves as adjunct professor at a number of local universities in southwest Michigan.
